Dr. Joe DeStefano, a Yorba Linda native and Esperanza High alumnus, has been an integrative health practitioner since 2000. His passion for the East Asian healing arts grew out of a lifetime of training in the martial arts. He rediscovered his love of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) while attending workshops at the Berkeley Acupressure Institute in the mid-1990s; after a successful career in environmental management, he returned to school to study TCM in 2005. By that time, he had accrued almost two decades of training in bodywork therapy, the use of external herbs, and incorporating techniques from both Eastern and Western medical massage traditions.
Dr. DeStefano earned his Bachelor of Health Science, with honors, from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, where he specialized in Tui Na Manual Therapy. Thanks to arrangements made by his professors, in 2008 he traveled to Shanghai and participated in an externship at Yue-Yang Integrative Medicine Hospital while completing additional studies at Shanghai University of TCM.
After returning from Shanghai, Dr. DeStefano was accepted into the four-year master’s degree program at Emperor’s College, the No. 1-ranked acupuncture school in California and one of the top schools in the U.S. There, he earned a Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine degree, with highest honors, and gained extensive experience in the treatment of behavioral health issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction, while building on his earlier orthopedics and pain management training.
A strong interest in integrative healthcare, especially pain management, led to residencies at the Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence-St. Joseph Medical Center; the Simms/Mann Health and Wellness Center at the UCLA Venice Family Clinic; and the HIV+ Community Clinic at BeingAlive L.A. He subsequently completed an academic doctorate at Pacific College, with a focus on the treatment of neuro-degenerative disorders.
In addition to his training in East Asian medicine, Dr. DeStefano is a proud alumnus of Loyola Marymount University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and theology, and a master’s degree in environmental science and engineering.
He has lovingly been accused of the ability to bend time. Not only is he active in his local parish, but in his spare time is an avid genealogist, an artisanal baker, professional opera singer, and voice-over artist. Of all the titles he holds, none makes him more proud than the role of “Daddy” to his daughter, Gigi.
