There is a Link Between Stress and the Experience of Mental Health Issues such as Anxiety and Depression in both Teens and Adults

The number of people looking for help with anxiety and depression has skyrocketed.

Both of these issues get in the way of thinking, relating to others, and many day-to-day functions. They are also an equal opportunity issue affecting all ages, gender, race, and background.

Covid-19 and other worldwide events have dramatically increased the prominence of anxiety and depression among adults and youth.

According to data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Statistics, more than 4 in 10 U.S. adults had developed symptoms of depression or anxiety by the end of 2020. This demonstrates a sharp increase from 2019, where only 1 in 10 U.S. adults showed either of these issues.

An additional poll from July 2020 also found that many adults are reporting specific negative impacts on their mental health and well-being, such as difficulty sleeping (36%) or eating (32%), increases in alcohol consumption or substance use (12%), and worsening chronic conditions (12%), due to worry and stress.

Young people are struggling most with their mental health.

The proportion of youth ages 11-17 who accessed screening was 9 percent higher than the average in 2019.

Not only are the number of youth/teenagers searching for help with their mental health increasing, but throughout the COVID-19 pandemic youth ages 11-17 have been more likely than any other age group to score for moderate to severe symptoms of anxiety and depression. Mental health and specifically depression and anxiety matter now more than ever.

As we adapt to the ongoing changes of Covid-19, conventional and complimentary treatments for these conditions need to be spoken about openly and accessible to all those suffering.

At Modern Acupuncture we believe that there is a link between stress and the experience of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. As we continue to focus on mental health, we will highlight the science of stress and its connection to the rise of anxiety and depression.

Complimentary therapies, including acupuncture that focus on reducing stress and developing a healthy lifestyle have been shown to increase overall well-being. Stay tuned for next week’s blog covering the benefits of acupuncture for wellness with additional self-care treatments to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Every time I come here, the staff genuinely makes me feel cared about and it is huge for my mental health. They really care and go the extra little bit and it shows. Not only do I get the healing treatment I come for, but I get a much-needed dose of basic human kindness.
