6 Reasons Women Use Acupuncture for Wellness in all Stages of Life

Acupuncture and other traditional Chinese modalities have been used for centuries to treat women’s health. This science-backed practice creates biochemical and physiological effects in the body that undeniably treat common health conditions faced.

Many women are becoming more interested in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for fertility issues, menstrual abnormalities, hormonal imbalances, menopause, and heart disease.

1 - Whole Body Health

Acupuncture is a holistic practice; it treats the whole person. Although this is not specific to women, maintaining homeostasis in your body for issues that affect everyone is extremely important. Our modern lifestyles are littered with stress, anxiety, depression, headaches, lack of sleep, digestive issues, fatigue, chronic pain, mental health imbalances, and more.

As a society we’ve become indifferent to the stress response (fight or flight) and have made chronic stress part of our day in the life with family, friends, work, and self. Our bodies becoming less efficient at recovering and healing daily, which can lead to a multitude of issues. Thankfully, acupuncture treats the root cause and improving overall wellbeing goes a long way to support specific issues women face.

Acupuncture has a calming effect on the nervous system, while improving blood circulation and regulating hormones.

2 - Menstrual Health

Acupuncture is one of other Chinese medicine practices that can help regulate and support women who have issues with menstrual cycles, whether PMS symptoms like migraines and headaches, painful periods, irregularities, heavy bleeding, skipped or no bleeding, PCOS, and endometriosis.

In visiting a Modern Acupuncture clinic, your Acupuncturist will review details of your period and overall health to move forward with a treatment plan that works best for you. On average you will track gradual improvements to your menstrual symptoms and wellness over at least 3 cycles. Oftentimes the same results analysis will be conducted if your goal is to become pregnant, as Acupuncturists will develop a plan to regulate and balance your flow, while addressing any other concerns.

3 - Fertility Support

Modern Acupuncturists believe that one of the most popular reasons women seek acupuncture care is to help increase their fertility. Some get treated due to hormone problems, irregular menstruation, and in conjunction with in-vitro fertilization (IVF), with the goal of increasing the chance of conceiving and sustaining a pregnancy.

Studies suggest that acupuncture is a safe form of treatment and may improve the success rate and quality of life for those patients who undergo IVF.

According to researchers funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, IVF results in pregnancy about 35% of the time, whereas adding acupuncture may increase it to about 45%.

4 - Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings on so many changes in a woman’s body on a very fast scale. Many times, women commonly experience symptoms such as sickness (which is not just in the morning), pain, fatigue, insomnia, inflammation and more.

Typical medications used in western medicine and other treatment methods cannot be used during pregnancy, so acupuncture is a wonderful alternative for expecting mom’s and the symptoms they may face.

The better you feel during pregnancy, the better your body can support the growing baby and labor. There are certain acupuncture points often used by Licensed Acupuncturists while trying to conceive that are completely avoided during pregnancy.

5 - Post-Partum

After having a baby, your body is in full recovering and healing mode, while either learning or experiencing life as you know it with a newborn. During this time, you must give yourself or any new mother you know, so much grace.

There are specific acupuncture points used to increase breast milk production, any imbalances in mood, boosting energy, and of course for all types of pain. Although it may be extremely difficult to manage life and find time for ‘self-care’, it truly is essential. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

6 - Menopause

Hot flashes, dizziness, insomnia, and moodiness are just the most common changes women face in perimenopause and menopause. The goal of acupuncture treatments are always to treat holistically, rather than offer a quick fix for women facing these symptoms.

Work with your local Modern Acupuncturist to create a sustainable plan that helps to reduce contributing factors of menopause.
