Kayla has been interested in medicine and helping people heal from a young age, declaring herself “pre-med” in middle school. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science from the University of Texas at Austin with focuses in Human Anatomy & Physiology. While applying to medical schools, Kayla worked at a retinal surgery center and realized she wanted to pursue a more holistic approach to treating the imbalances of the body. Kayla received both her Master’s and Doctorate degrees from AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine in
Austin, TX. While at school, she was part of the inaugural resident group treating veterans at the Austin Outpatient Clinic as part of a collaboration with the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the importance of acupuncture’s role in pain management for those with opioid dependence. Kayla loves how acupuncture taps into the body’s natural ability to heal itself throughout all the body systems.
Kayla decided to join the team at Modern Acupuncture because she loves the idea of presenting acupuncture from a modern perspective. She believes that demystifying this ancient medicine and making it more accessible and affordable to the public will ultimately help so many more people.
Kayla has always been active as a swimmer, runner, cyclist, and has been practicing yoga for over 15 years. In her spare time, Kayla loves eating, hiking, and camping around Texas with her husband and their energetic Border collie/Aussie pup!
Laurie attended school at the Academy of Oriental Medicine of Austin. Laurie had studied natural medicine since 1999, but in 2003 receiving acupuncture and herbal therapy tremendously helped her allergies and inspired her to become an acupuncturist. She says it is the best feeling in the world to be able to take someone’s pain and stress away, and that’s what she loves most about being an acupuncturist. Laurie decided to become a part of the Modern Acupuncture team because she believes it will open doors for this time-tested medicine. She is also excited about being able to improve people’s quality of life on a much larger scale with Modern Acupuncture’s accessibility and effectiveness. When she’s not practicing, Laurie enjoys yoga, running, paleo cooking, volunteering, and anything to do with dogs!
